Fries dipped in sugar!!!

5th September 2011
“Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin.” Gwyneth Paltrow

Did you know that most fast-food chains dip their French fries in sugar, to obtain that golden hue after frying - another reason to avoid junk food! I read this in a running magazine yesterday and thought ouch, no wonder we have weight problems. There was also an article in the Sunday Mirror titled, "how can we afford to feed out kids healthy food when supermarkets sell doughnuts cheaper than fruit and veg?" Apparently supermarkets have ramped up the cost of fresh fruit and vegetables by more than twice the rate of inflation In the last year - despite Britain's obesity crisis! but according to the British Retail Consortium they've never been cheaper! Who to believe?

It's not only the cost that concerns us when we are trying to eat healthy it's also time - juggling work, kids and exercise isn't easy so good nutrition is vital but we don't have hours to spend in the kitchen.

I've never really thought about how the food I eat is affecting my energy levels until I started this running plan and when I read that running mag yesterday it made me think about it. Some days I find it easier than others to finish that half hour and now I'm wandering if what I eat makes a difference, so I'm going to monitor it over the next week or so.

Be honest you may not be trying to run 5k but you still want enough energy to get you through your busy day don't you? How often do you skip a decent lunch at work and grab a can of pop and a bag of crisps later? Do you ever have a rushed dinner because you have to get the kids tea ready or get them to one of their many after school things? Moms particularly are often guilty of neglecting themselves when it comes to eating good quality food. It doesn't have to be that way, we just need to get back to basics, we can enjoy healthy eating without it becoming yet another chore!

I rarely have more than twenty minutes to prepare my meals and if I do have more time I don't want to spend it in the kitchen. Eating good food should hopefully make you WANT TO go walk the dog instead of stay in bed or get active in another way.

Food can make you feel sluggish or make you want to get up and do something. So here are a few tips to eat better and be time efficient.

Eat fruit and vegetables - they don't have to be fresh, frozen or tinned is just as good.

When cooking - double up and freeze, that way you can eat a home made meal another day without having to cook from scratch.

Eat a good lunch especially if you know you're too rushed later to stop for dinner. I eat my main meal at lunchtime because it fits in with my life but it's also a good thing to eat your larger meals earlier.

Bulk eat! No I don't mean stuff your face ;) I mean instead of a glass of juice eat the orange and rather than eating frosties have porridge, food in it's natural state is going to fill you up quicker.

Always drink enough an I don't mean wine, sometimes when we think we are hungry, we are actually thirsty and be choosy about what you drink as another thing I found out yesterday which is worth sharing is that fizzy drinks even the zero calorie ones contain phosphates which can leach calcium from the bones so it may be worth cutting them out because we need calcium to keep our bones healthy and strong especially as we age.

Lastly I don't care how busy you are or how much you want to lose weight never, ever go to bed hungry!

Make a decision to start your week healthy - I have.  And of course end the week healthy too!

We've discovered Aldi, it is the best price around for fruit and veg. We go there and get whatever we can.
