Smile Cards

I love this idea, doing random acts of kindness for no other reason other than because you can. This website http://www.helpothers.org/index.php encourages people to join the game of doing anonymous acts of kindness and leaving behind a smile card to keep the ripple going.

On this website there’s lots of ideas of acts of kindness you can do such as;

Give a friend your favorite inspirational book with a personal note attached.
Connect two friends who had not previously met each other.
Make a meal for someone who hasn’t got the time – if you’re a Weight Watcher member, take a meal to your meeting and pass it onto another member.
Help someone with a chore, unexpectedly.
Get in touch with an old friend who you'd like to reconnect with.
Strike up a conversation with an elderly person.
Buy bottles of water and hand them to passers-bys with a smile.
Pay for the person behind you in line.
Pick someone unknown around you, make them smile at any cost.
Call an animal shelter and donate at least one item they need.
Go to the nearest park and clean up as much as you can!
Leave flowers on the doorstep of someone you don't know and run!
Pay for an unknown person's meal anonymously.
Give away something important to you.
Give away one of your possessions RIGHT NOW.

I love this idea because I tend to go with the random acts of kindness theory, because I don't do Christmas and I've such a lousy memory I forget birthdays unless I'm reminded, I tend to buy my friends pressies as and when I see something they'd like, I think that shows your thinking of them constantly and not just at certain times of the year.

You can download the cards and print them off yourself or you can even order some for free, mine should arrive today, I ordered them a couple of weeks ago.

Kindness is contagious! Keep it going.

Smoked Cod Concoction - 5.5pts

1/2 pack Microwaveable Uncle Bens savoury rice (any flavour) - ready in 2 minutes
poach 200g Smoked Cod in skimmed milk, add any veggies you like, I added chopped mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, diced carrot, diced cucumber as that was what was in my fridge. Takes approx 10 minutes, drain excess milk off and serve with rice.

scrumptious. No spices or garlic added as for a change I wanted to taste the vegetables and the fish.

It was so filling I couldn't eat it all! Bonus.

Scrapbooking

Loving the new digital scrapbooking, I'm going to enjoy putting together a book of Alfie's Antics!

If you fancy a go, check out http://www.daisytrail.com/ you can download some free software to get you started.

Have you ever noticed

that someday's just go wrong! I'm having on of those morning where everythings going wrong, trying to do my paperwork and I can't find the credit card reports so I've now got to go to last nights venue on my way to my next meeting to go through the bin! Nice. Lots of other silly things too, nothing huge just enough to slow my morning down and make it difficult. The trick when this happens is to remind yourself its really not important enough to get wound up. I remind myself that yesterday was wonderful and nothing in my life has changed since then so this is just a slight irritation that can be rectified and really isn't worth getting wound up over!

Just go with the flow, except the ups and downs, that's life and it's fab even when its poo! Whatever kind of life you have, it's always better than the alternative wouldn't you agree?

A great book to read to help you appreciate this is The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff, you can get it for a couple of pounds on Amazon

After reading this book I realised I loved the Pooh bear he's super cool and his wisdom knows no bounds.

You gotta smile as I'm typing this one of my helpers has just rang to say she's not well and won't be able to help today or tomorrow. Poor things on her way to hospital with lung problems, which makes my lack of staff problem not really a problem!

The wisdom of Pooh -
"A little Consideration, a little Thought for Others, makes all the difference.”

Everyone loves to be loved. Mark Spitz

Yay Alfie didn’t wake me up in the early hours so I’ve slept in till 5.15am, excellent! I’m also still on track with my diet, which is a super bonus, another great day yesterday, cooked a lovely meal for lunch photo and recipe on my blog.

I was chatting with a friend yesterday via Skype and she made my day by telling me "you really change and effect peoples lives with your sunshine" How lovely is that, so today make it your mission to make someone’s day in any way possible, it could be a nice remark or it could be by doing something helpful. Speaking of which, I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I have to say I could not cope without my helpers, I love my job but it would be physically impossible to do without all my wonderful ladies helping me. They put themselves out and help me out in my other meetings too when I’m short and last night Jodie was a godsend, she isn’t officially a helper she’d come with her mom and wasn’t stopping but because I was short she stayed and handed the cards out for me all night, so she’s my star of the week as there was only 4 of us and 75 members which would have been awful! Becky walked in half way through and helped me weigh so I was relieved to see her too!

We’re all doing well with the weight loss in meetings too, so far this week we’ve lost 274lb which is awesome, last night one of my members Michael got yet another silver seven that’s his 17th! He’s lost a staggering 120lb so far, if my memory serves me well he’s my 3rd biggest loser to date after Becky and Heather, but I have a feeling he’s set to be my number 1 as he still has more to lose and he’s so focused.

So we’ve all decided to lose weight and change our habits, the secret is to change one habit at a time by making small changes. Here’s today’s habit changing tip;

Stop Punishing Yourself - Don’t beat yourself up for having unhealthy habits. Guilt and shame are poor motivators. Instead, congratulate yourself for recognizing the need to change and wanting to improve. I too often hear words such as disgusted, disappointed, angry when members take about how they feel about the eating behaviour, this really won’t ever help you lose weight. What reaction do you think that would have on a child if when it didn’t get something right the first time you told them you were disgusted with them? Not a positive reaction I’m sure!

So celebrate and record your successes, your feelings and your ‘a-ha’ moment. Every time you make a better health choice, exercise and say no to something that you know can derail your diet, congratulate yourself, record it and reward yourself by letting yourself feel good about it.

Any small success is worthy of a pat on the back and perhaps a little reward. Don't hold off on self-congratulations until you reach your total weight goal. Reward yourself for each major step toward your goal and of course I don’t mean with food or drink, something else such as a magazine, or a book or something to wear.

We’re talking about moving more in my meetings this week and the exercise of the moment appears to be Zhumba, it’s everywhere and everyone’s trying it. A lot of you are interested but don’t know what to expect, well a member last night gave me the solution to that problem, she does it in the house following a You Tube video – genius! So here’s one I’ve found for you to take a peek at but if you search there’s lots more http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vf0q6qtThF4

And this is a clip about Zumba on the today show

Go on give it a go you know you want to!

Found my inner Delia

Yes Delilah is officially back in the kitchen. I love it when I enjoy cooking and eating the end results. Today I've made Pan Fried Chicken, turkey rashers, peas & mash for 6½pts per portion

2 x medium 165g chicken breasts (5pts)
3 slices turkey rashers chopped (1pt)
low fat cooking spray
4 chopped spring onions
1 diced carrot
150ml stock
100g frozen peas (1pt)
1 little gem lettuce

Boil & mash 300g potatoes (3pts) or I used Smash cheddar and onion flavour, 1½pts per portion, to serve with the following;

Season chicken breasts, spray a non stick frying pan with spray and brown the chicken for 1 minute. Turn chicken and add turkey rashers to the pan – fry for 1½ minutes. Stir in carrot and spring onions & cook for 30 seconds until bright green, then pour in the chicken stock and bring to a simmer. Cover then pan, reduce heat & simmer for 10 minutes.Stir in frozen peas and lettuce, re-cover the pan and cook for 3-4 mins until peas are tender & lettuce has wilted.

It was absolutely delicious and very filling, the chicken is poached more or less so much juicier than normal.

I forgot to have my breakfast this morning - how did I of all people forget to eat, so I ended up having an Alpen bar from Jenny - yak, rather have a Weight Watchers new oaty bar any day of the week, or one of the all day breakfast bars.

29th June 2010 todays facebook email

Never look down on anybody unless you're helping them up. Jesse Jackson

Good morning did you know there’s 3pts in a Wagon Wheel! That was my moment of indulgence last night, what made me crave such a thing when I don’t normally eat chocolate, well I think it had something to do with the skinny bird I’d seen walking with her boyfriend eating a BOX of Maltesers! Yes a BOX not just a packet and she was no more than a size 8 – where is the justice in that – it was either the wagon wheel or mounting the pavement and running her over ;-) Only joking – honest, it does make you think though doesn’t it, how come some seem to eat what they want and others have to watch every mouthful when according to scientists a pound of fat is equivalent to 3,500 calories and we are what we eat – blah blah blah – whatever! The skinny bird didn’t look like a round ball of chocolate to me

Having said all that I’m in a fab mood this morning, I lost 2.5lb yesterday at my weigh in which I was thrilled with, I’m getting closer to getting back to my goal, 7lbs off and 9lbs to go with 10 weeks to do it. I know I can and I will do it because I’m back in the zone. Even with the Chocolate wagon wheel last night I still only ate 18pts yesterday so I’m chuffed that I managed to keep it in check.

Last night I made a beef stir fry just by using beansprouts, pepper, mushrooms, spring onion, Asda’s quick fry beef steak that’s on offer 3 packs for a tenner, teriyaki sauce and soy sauce and very tasty it was too for 4pts, although mine was probably 3 after giving Alfie some of the beef. I know you shouldn’t share your food with dogs, but hey ho, he’s my dog and I only share good food with him, I wouldn’t give him junk.

I realised yesterday that I missed my website Bev’s World that I used to do and had to close down so yesterday I started my own blog, it’s my way of doing a journal but its online, it’s the ramblings of a happy middle-aged woman ;) and because it’s for me I can write whatever I like, it’s not just going to be about dieting like before. I enjoy writing and find it therapeutic, so this way I get to write what I want, when I want and it helps to clear my head, I may not use it every day but it will be there when I’m in the mood to write. It also means I haven’t got to be on facebook to do it, I can email my entries from my mobile which is cool and photos, videos etc are easier to upload. So if you’re ever bored and wonder what goes on in my head, check it out http://wwbevsworld.blogspot.com/ It also means those on facebook will still be able to read my daily emails because I’ll upload them to the blog.

Last night when I left my meeting after a crazy busy night because we were short staffed and the room is so warm, I realised as I was driving home how much I love my work, every one of my meetings has a different quality to it and Monday nights is such a laugh, my members really get me and each other and we all leave on a high. How many people get to say its fun to go to work!

So today I was going to give you a list of 21 ways to change a habit, but instead I’m going to drip feed them ideas to you one at a time so you actually think about each one, because I know that if you’re anything like me you’ll skim over the list, nod in the right places then continue with your day and do nothing.

So the first tip is to eliminate “I’ll try” From Your Vocabulary - When we say, “I tried,” in the past tense, it means we have failed at reaching a goal. Likewise, saying “I’ll try” is a way of excusing ourselves from doing the hard work of accomplishing whatever it is we are setting out to do. When you make a commitment or promise to yourself or others, say instead, “I will do it!”

Yesterday I heard the words “I’ll try” quite a few time so instead of saying “I’ll try” add a bit of UPMH and say “I’ll triumph”, that’s much more likely to get you going this week. Here’s to a fantastic day of tracking and triumph – are you with me!

How cute is my Alfie

My Alfie has a bit of a shoe fetish, he always sleeps on a pair of my shoes, I'm not sure if this is because he believes if i want to go out, I need my shoes so he will know when I'm making my escape.

One of my many interests

I'm hoping that link works, I really enjoy scrapbooking but it makes an awful mess so I usually only do it when I'm away at Christmas or when I have an entire day free. So I was thrilled when I signed up for this website, now I'm able to make digital scrapbook pages that I can much quicker. I plan to spend the rest of the year putting together a book of Alfies Adventures, his first year in this world.

http://www.daisytrail.com/scrapbook.html?uid=21897

You've have to copoy and past the link in your browser but it this should take you to where I've uploaded my first few digital scrapbook pages.

You talking to me?

Everyday I send my Weight Watcher members an email via facebook, some however don't have an account so this blog is a way of them being able to read the content of that email. Todays was as follows.

Talk to yourself!

WHAT – WHY!?

Because it’s the only way you can guarantee what’s said, and you get to listen to what you want to hear!

Think about it, have you ever been caught talking to yourself in a supermarket and you turn around and say, “I’m talking to myself”, and the other person responds, “It’s the only way you get the answer you want!” Well they’re right – it is.

Seriously affirmations are the most amazing way of convincing yourself you are changing. How did you learn your 12 times table? Most of us by repetition until it was programmed into our minds and we never forgot it, although I have to admit I never could get it quite right! Obviously because I didn’t repeat it enough – too impatient see.

Did you know it’s impossible to think two things at the same time? I know if you’re a woman you’re probably thinking, ‘well I can do two things at the same time – I multitask all the time’, but trust me, the things you multitask are things that you do automatically, and you don’t need to think about them. You try giving directions to someone whilst writing a letter; it’s impossible without stopping one to do the other.

Here’s another challenge - try smiling and feeling unhappy – that’s impossible too! False smiles don’t count.

Not convinced? Then try this experiment: Think about the taste of chocolate (that heavenly rich texture, the satisfying, sweet flavour, melting in your mouth) at the exact same time as you add 35 and 87. At the same time - it’s impossible, you can interchange the two thoughts, but you can’t actually think about both things at the same time. I know which one I’d rather think about!

So where am I going with this. Well, apparently our brains have over 50,000 thoughts a day and as thoughts become things, I’ve learnt to choose good ones. That’s what I’m suggesting you do and affirmations are a great way of helping you to do that.

What are Affirmations?

An affirmation is a positive statement written, thought or spoken, that you repeat to yourself. It’s a declaration that something is true - affirmations send positive messages to your brain to help re-train your thoughts. Your mind believes everything you think – so just think about that for a moment, would you rather your brain hear, “I’m hopeless, I’ll never do it”, or “I’m amazing, can I be any better”. I know I’d rather hear encouraging words from others, so it makes sense to encourage ourselves too.

Today’s affirmation could be
The summers making me slimmer!

Or an affirmation for any day could be one of the following;

I’m becoming the me I want to be.
Everyday I’m becoming slimmer and healthier.
I choose to eat healthy at every opportunity.

Make your own up if you don’t like those. Mine has always been, “Everyday I’m healthy and happy.”

Alfie playing football better than the England Squad!

This is my little Alfie Doodle playing with his football last week. We've had Alfie roughly 9 weeks and he's a lovely little puppy. I bought him for my mom after her little Lucy died but I've stolen him, I let her share him with me though. We go for two walks a day and as I type he's guarding the bottom step so I can't leave the house without him knowing!

Pittta less!

Well it was meant to be the scrambled egg pitta pockets, but the pittas had gone green mouldy already! I only bought them Saturday, shows how hot it is at the moment.

So instead I stir fried cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, pepper, spring onions and 3 turkey rashers then threw in a gem lettuce at the end and added some dried chives, garlic used the dried stuff in a mill) and pepper. I scrambled all 6 eggs with a little milk in the microwave and served with veggies. Served 2 and was Delicious. the eggs I weighed as they were quite big and they worked out at 9pts, Alfie ate all my turkey rashers so really my portion was only 4.5pts!

The eggs were delicious, Tracy got them for me from the farm - not sure which farm but they were very orange as you can see.

So it's almost 1pm and I haven't got to load my car to go out for almost 3hours so I may go and have half hour in the sunshine with my book, it's too hot to walk Alfie so a sit in the shade for him will be good too.

Yay I lost weight ;-)

It's almost lunchtime and I've done a meeting this morning and got weighed I lost 2.5lb so that's the 1.5lb gone that I gained last week and an extra pound - whoop whoop. I'm really chuffed, I weigh 11st 1lb so that's 7lb lost and another 9lb to go to get back to my goal weight which I'd like done for September as I've got a Weight Watchers leaders conference.

I'm just about to make lunch, I've decided to make Scrambled Egg and Turkey Rasher Pitta Pocket - makes 2 = 4pts each

2 medium pitta bread 4pts
3 slices turkey rashers 1pts
2 eggs 2½pts
2 medium tomato(s), de-seeded & chopped
pinch of salt & pepper
1 teaspoon fresh chives, snipped
1 teaspoon polyunsaturated margarine ½pts

Lightly toast the pitta bread; then wrap it in foil to keep warm.
Heat a small non-stick saucepan. Dry-fry the rashers pieces and cut into pieces. Melt the margarine in the saucepan and lightly scramble the egg, until just beginning to set. Return the bacon to the saucepan, with the tomato and chives and gently fold the mixture together. Season well. Spoon the egg mixture into the warm pitta bread and serve immediately.

Might add some extra pepper, cucumber and spring onions to it to bulk it out and serve with some lettuce.

The sunshine helps, when its nice and bright outside I feel better, I think most people do. Except maybe Alfie who's not impressed at all.

I've been drooling over the new iphone this morning but as yet am still not sure whether I want one or not, would I use it as much as I think I would! I've just finished my contract on my iphone and think it might be easier just to pay the cheaper tariff for now.

Anyway I'm off to cook lunch.

Monday Morning

I've missed doing my blog, I used to have my own website www.bevsworld.co.uk but for one reason and another I had to close it down and I've missed it, because it used to be my way of offloading and clearing my head. So I'll use this blog instead for whatever I wish, my website was mainly for my slimming club but this is gonna be for me to talk about my life and my thoughts. It doesn't matter if its never read ;-)

Monday morning and feeling fine, isn't life great! I've had a lovely weekend the weather is awesome and life really is good. Yesterday me and Alfie (my 23 week old Shih Tzu) went for an early morning stroll, he almost escaped and I had to rugby tackle him to the ground grazing my knee (it stings like hell today). Then I finished painting the front gate so that I could put the netting back up to stop him escaping again.

After my Sunday activity of painting and walking I went and sat up the garden on my new chairs and read my book drinking a huge glass of water which was on my new table, on of my helpers Tracey gave them to me and they're actually for indoors but as they're made from metal and my house isn't big enough we've decided to make it garden furniture.

I've eaten healthly all weekend, and yesterday really enjoyed cooking a meal for the first time in a long time, made a creamy risotto and it was delicious, here's the recipe.

Creamy mushroom risotto – serves 2 – 4pts per serving

2 sprays of Weight Watcher oil spray (1pt)
100g risotto rice (5pts)
300ml hot vegetable stock
175g chopped mushrooms
1 carrot diced small
1 courgette diced small
1 clove garlic, crushed
60g low fat soft cheese (1½pts)
a handful of roughly chopped fresh parsley
freshly ground pepper

Spray saucepan once with oil spray, add the rice and gently fry over medium heat for 2 minutes or until lightly golden. Gradually add stock and 150ml of hot water, then bring to the boil. Simmer for 20m or until tender and all the liquid is absorbed. Add a little more water if required during cooking.

Spray frying pan with oil spray and add the carrot, courgette and mushrooms and garlic. Fry for 4-5m, until starting to brown.

Stir the soft cheese into the cooked rice. If the mixture is too thick add a little skimmed milk. Remove the rice from the heat and stir in the mushrooms, parsley and black pepper to taste. Serve immediately.

We (mom and me) watched Michael Jacksons "This is It", I've never been a fan but I really enjoyed seeing him as himself, not just reading about him. Highly recommend you watch it, such a shame he never got to perform the tour because it would have been absolutely awesome.

It's 8.30 and I've got to go to work now, but I'm glad I've started blogging again, I know I'm going to enjoy it.
