If only....

2nd August 2013
I would rather be round and jolly than thin and cross.  Ann Widdecombe

“If only”, “I wished”, “I should’ve”, “Why didn’t I?, “Shouldn’t have had”
Do you say those things very often when you’re about to get on the scales or after you’ve got off them?   I hear it all the time, “if only I’d said no to ……..”, “I knew I should’ve planned”,  Why didn’t I track this week”.
The trouble with these statements is they don’t change anything, they’re just reflecting on your actions, you’re facing the wrong way – backward instead of forward!  It’s wasting time, and if you let it become a habit, it can be a real block, an excuse to not succeed.
We all make mistakes, they’re what we learn from, but if you spend all your time lamenting this and regretting that you’re never really learning because you’re not getting out of the past tense, and we can be in danger of actually enjoying the dwelling, sometimes we like to go over past mistakes and wallow, because even if your telling someone else how bad you’ve been, you’re still centre stage in the story so getting attention.
Shift your focus!  Change your key words and start substituting phrases that lift you instead of dragging you down.  Look forward not back, replace “If only”, with “Next time”.
It’s turning a negative into a positive instantly, when a member gets a gain at the scales and says, “next time I’m going to……” I know they’re on their way to overcoming that problem and heading toward a weight loss.  They’ve decided to use that week to learn from, regardless of how they feel over the results at the scale, they’re moving forward and taking action.
There’s something for you to think about isn’t it!
So I’ll leave you with that thought, no matter how difficult this weight loss journey feels sometimes, whatever you do – don’t quit.  Because as hard as it is to stick with it, starting over is even harder!
Today choose your words wisely because the have great power!
xx
