Life begets life. Energy creates energy. It is by spending oneself that one becomes rich. Sarah Bernhardt
Rain rain go away, come back another day! I’m smiling now remembering that rhyme from when I was a child, do you remember it. At the same time I’m also feeling blessed after just seeing a story on Yahoo news this morning about a 2 year old girl dying after falling from a 2nd floor flat. Why you ask, because I fell from the bedroom window when I was 4 and lived, so that’s one of the reasons I count my blessings every day. The after effects of that accident shaped my life in more ways than you can imagine but as I read somewhere this morning, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!” So next time you’re having a bad time remember that, everything you endure makes you stronger. Yesterday I had an inspiring email from a member which showed real strength, sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone and making a move that’s going to totally change your life is scary and takes great courage, but she’d done it and she will be so glad she did in time. Well done you – you know who you are.
After watching someone get splashed by a car on Friday in Birmingham and get really angry, I was reminded about the alternate story technique, it’s the secret to never getting wound up again by someone else. Just for a second imagine it was you walking down the street with your dog in the rain and a car drives past you at a stupidly fast speed, driving through a puddle and splashing both you and your dog, leaving you both absolutely drenched! Instantly you have that instant reaction to think “OMG, what a jerk!” Of course it’s possible that he was a jerk, but its also possible that he was rushing off to hospital because his mother had fallen ill or one of his children has been hurt or he was a doctor and there was an emergency he needed to get to, to treat a patient. So yes it’s possible that he was a jerk but there are also numerous other explanations for why he was speeding the way he was and driving so erratically and you really can’t be sure of any of them but by creating an alternative story that says he’s not a jerk you’re activating the compassion that’s inside of you which is a more fulfilling approach and certainly one that aids you to let go of the situation, than the alternative which is that he’s a jerk!
So that’s the alternative story technique which I’d encourage you to try in your life, and I hope it helps you to let go of things that people do to you and increases your compassion. As a lot of us eat when we’re angry, frustrated, wound up, this idea may help you cope with those feelings in another way that doesn’t result in weight gain.
It also reminds me of something I’ve read, “Who would you be without your story”. Think about that for a moment, have you noticed how we all have beliefs about any given situation, we put together these stories in our heads and we never really know if they are true, we can’t know. We all do it, something happens and instead of talking to the person, we run through scenarios in our mind about what they thought or said etc, it’s quite funny when you think about it. So next time you find yourself getting wound up over a situation ask yourself the following questions;
Is it true?
Can you absolutely know that it’s true?
How do you react when you believe that thought?
Who would you be without the thought?
If this idea interests you, then you can find more about Katie Byron and the Work by going to her website http://www.thework.com/index.php
I suppose you could use this idea with those thoughts about food that you get, “I must have chocolate” for example, as yourself the questions above and see what the outcome is?
Remember life starts now.
Are you living yet?
